Wikileaks Uncovers Syrian conflict

wikileaks syria filesWIKILEAKS has begun publishing more than 2 million emails from the Syrian Government expected to not only embarrass the strife-torn country but also its enemies.

Reuters reported that WikiLeaks spokeswoman Sarah Harrison said the emails were from Syrian political figures, government ministries and companies, dating from August 2006 to March 2012.

She read out a statement from WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange saying, “The material is embarrassing to Syria, but it is also embarrassing to Syria’s opponents”.

“It helps us not merely to criticise one group or another, but to understand their interests, actions and thoughts. It is only through understanding this conflict that we can hope to resolve it.”

WikiLeaks said the emails – “The Syria Files” – showed how the Syrian government and economy worked but “also reveal how the West and Western companies say one thing and do another”.

According to the news service, this release is eight times larger than its notorious release of diplomatic cables in 2010 which frustrated the United States.
